Time for the Tax Return?

When the Tax Return comes through your letterbox it can sound like the "Big Bang" as it hits the mat. It is a worry for many people but one of the most important things to remember is that there is always someone you can turn to for help,

As to whom to approach, it all depends on how comfortable you are in dealing with your financial affairs, how complex they are and how much time/effort you are prepared to put in to deal with the form, correspondence etc.

By all means seek professional help, after all that is what we are here to provide. However, it would be wrong of me to tell you that companies such as ourselves are the only alternative.

If you feel able and want to deal with the position yourself then there are a number of books/software packages available to buy which can help, indeed it is possible to file your Tax Return on line. However, one thing that many people forget is the local Inland Revenue office, you can always speak to the Inspector of Taxes and you may be pleasantly surprised as they are normally very helpful. Why not try the Revenue's website?

Now, do not get me wrong, I am not trying to put myself out of work! Many people find the whole process of dealing with their tax position is confusing, takes too much of their time or feel happier knowing that someone else is there to help them. For those people a professional adviser is the right choice.

How do you choose an adviser to help you? That is a difficult question to answer. However, one of the most important points is that you will need to build a relationship with your adviser as they are going to have to know your personal financial details. So speak to them, if possible have a meeting to discuss matters and make sure you are comfortable with what you are told.

All good advisers will be happy to give you a quote for the work they are going to do. In exceptional cases it may be difficult to be precise but if that is the case then you should at least be told the basis on which any additional fees will be payable.
